Cuttack sits on a long, narrow strip of land between two rivers, the Mahanadi to the north and its branch, the Kathajodi, to the south. On a map, the city looks almost like an island, with water on both sides and bridges and embankments linking it to the land around it. This is where the Mahanadi begins to spread into its delta.
The city has been an important centre for around a thousand years, and it was the capital of Odisha until the government moved to nearby Bhubaneswar in the late 1940s. The remains of Barabati Fort, with its moat, sit near the Mahanadi, next to the well-known cricket stadium of the same name.
The older streets are tight and irregular, packed into the space between the rivers. Cuttack is also famous for its silver filigree work, known as tarakasi. A Cuttack map poster shows the city held between two wide rivers, with the older lanes at its centre.
