Dailekh is the headquarters of Dailekh District in Nepal's Karnali Province, set in the middle hills of the country's far west. The town occupies high ground above the surrounding valleys, and on a map its streets follow the lie of the land closely. A central bazaar area gives way to lanes and paths that curve along the slopes, while roads switchback down towards the rivers below.
The district is widely known for its natural flames, places where gas escapes from the ground and burns continuously. Several of these sites are revered as shrines and draw pilgrims from across the region. The area also has historic ties to the medieval Khasa kingdom of western Nepal, and old temples and stone monuments are found throughout the surrounding hills.
