Damāvand lies in a valley in the Alborz mountains, east of Tehran, and takes its name from the mountain whose volcanic cone rises to the north. On the map, the town follows the shape of the valley floor, with streets curving along the contours and orchards and gardens spreading between built areas. The surrounding terrain is steep, so the town has a long, uneven outline rather than a compact circle.
Mount Damavand, at over 5,600 metres the highest summit in Iran, holds a central place in Persian poetry and legend. The town below has been settled for a long time and has a historic Friday Mosque. Today it is also a place where Tehran residents come for cooler summer air and the green of the valley.
