Dammarie-les-Lys sits on the left bank of the Seine, directly next to Melun in Seine-et-Marne, south-east of Paris. The river bends along its northern side, and the town stretches south and west from the water. Its map combines riverside quarters, post-war housing estates and older residential streets that grew up around the historic village centre.
The town takes part of its name from the Abbaye du Lys, a Cistercian abbey founded in the thirteenth century with the support of Blanche of Castile, whose ruins still stand in a park. To the south, the streets give way to woodland at the edges of the Fontainebleau forest area, and the railway line toward Paris crosses the town.
