Daqing grew in a way few cities do. After oil was found beneath the Songnen Plain in 1959, settlements sprang up around wells and pumping stations rather than around a single historic core. The result on a map is a loose constellation of districts, including Sartu and Ranghulu, linked by long straight roads and separated by open ground, water and reed beds.
The name itself means great celebration, chosen because the discovery came in the tenth anniversary year of the People's Republic. Daqing became the country's best-known oilfield and a symbol of industrial self-reliance. That history is legible from above: rail spurs, pipelines and service roads cut across the land at practical angles, and residential blocks cluster where work once demanded them.
Water is the quieter theme. Dozens of shallow lakes and marshes dot the area, some ringed by parks, others left as wetland reserves where migrating birds rest. Lakes and wetlands
Shallow lakes and marshes appear as irregular pale shapes between districts. On a monochrome print they break up the street pattern and give the composition a soft, uneven rhythm.

Long straight roads and rail lines laid out to serve wells and facilities cross the plain in clean strokes, a reminder that industry, not topography, drew this map.
