Davos stretches for several kilometres along the Landwasser valley in Graubünden, and on the map it reads as a continuous band of streets. Davos Dorf at the northern end meets the Davosersee, while Davos Platz to the south holds the main commercial centre. The Promenade runs through both, parallel to the main road and the Rhaetian Railway, with buildings climbing a short way up the slopes.
Davos first became known in the nineteenth century as a health resort, where tuberculosis patients came for the dry mountain air, and its sanatoriums inspired Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain. The town has since become a winter sports centre and, each January, the meeting place of the World Economic Forum. It also hosts the Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament every December.

The lake at the northern end of town is a compact oval beside Davos Dorf, used for sailing in summer and circled by a walking path.
Parsenn and Jakobshorn
A funicular and cable cars climb from the valley floor to ski areas on both sides of town, so the slopes frame Davos from east and west.
