Deneysville lies on the southern shore of the Vaal Dam, one of South Africa's largest reservoirs, which forms part of the boundary between the Free State and Gauteng. On a map the town's most striking feature is the water: an irregular shoreline of bays and headlands, where flooded valleys meet the gentle grasslands of the Highveld.
The town takes its name from Deneys Reitz, the soldier, writer and politician. Its holiday houses and residential streets reach down toward the water, and yacht and boating clubs occupy several points along the shore. Inland, a separate residential area sits a short distance from the lakeside grid, which gives the map two clearly distinct clusters of streets.
