Dessau is in Saxony-Anhalt, close to where the Mulde flows into the Elbe. Since 2007 it has formed the city of Dessau-Roßlau together with its neighbour across the Elbe. From above, the centre sits on flat ground south of the Elbe and west of the Mulde, with broad avenues, rail lines and a scattering of parks. Toward the rivers, the city gives way to meadows and old floodplain woods.
The city is known worldwide as the home of the Bauhaus from 1925 to 1932. Walter Gropius designed the school building and the Masters' Houses here, and both are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. Dessau is also at the centre of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, an eighteenth-century landscape of English-style parks and estates that is itself on the UNESCO list.
