Dessie lies in the Amhara highlands of northern Ethiopia, at a high altitude in a valley enclosed by mountains. From above, the terrain determines the city's shape. The built-up area stretches along the valley floor, and the streets climb only as far as the slopes allow. Beyond that, steep hillsides and ridges surround the city on almost every side.
The main north–south highway, connecting Addis Ababa with the north of the country, runs through Dessie, making it an important stop and trading centre on that route. Most of the city's activity is concentrated along this road and the streets branching off it, and the neighbourhoods extend up the side valleys.
