Detmold was the residence of the princes of Lippe, and its map still centres on the Residenzschloss and the park beside it. The old town around the castle keeps a compact pattern of streets, with half-timbered houses lining many of them. Beyond the centre, residential areas spread outward, and the Werre river runs through the town.
To the south-west, the land rises into the Teutoburg Forest, where the Hermannsdenkmal stands on a wooded hill. The monument commemorates Arminius and the battle against the Roman legions in 9 AD, and it is one of the most visited landmarks in the region. The forest's contours give the edge of the map a strong sense of relief.
