Dezful stands on the Dez River in northern Khuzestan, where the Zagros foothills meet the plain. The old city is built on a raised bank above the east side of the river, and its lanes run down toward the water in a close, irregular pattern. Across the river, newer districts spread out on flatter ground with wider streets and larger blocks.
The city's name is usually traced to the words for fortress and bridge, and an old bridge with foundations from the Sasanian era still crosses the Dez here. Houses in the old quarter traditionally had shavadoon, cool underground rooms dug into the bank, used to escape the intense summer heat of Khuzestan.
A Dezful map poster centres on that river crossing. The curve of the Dez, the bridges and the contrast between the tight historic fabric and the open plan of the modern city make a strong composition, while the Dez Dam, one of Iran's large reservoirs, lies in the hills upstream to the north.
