Dhūri lies in Sangrur district, in the middle of the Malwa plain. The land here is so flat that the map has no contours to organise it. Instead, the rail lines and roads provide the structure. Dhūri is a railway junction, and the tracks crossing the town divide it into distinct sectors, each with its own grain of lanes.
Close to the tracks, the older market streets are tight and irregular. Further out, newer residential colonies appear in more regular rectangles. Beyond them lies the Punjab countryside: long straight field boundaries, irrigation channels and village roads running in near-parallel lines towards neighbouring settlements. In black and white, those fields form a fine, even texture.
