Diepholz lies in the flat lowland of western Lower Saxony, where the Hunte river runs north toward the Dümmer, one of the largest lakes in the state. The town grew around a castle guarding a passage through the surrounding moors, and its centre still gathers close to the river and the old castle grounds. From above, the settlement forms a compact island within wide, open country.
The surrounding land is part of the Diepholz moor lowland, a landscape of peat bogs, drained meadows and long, straight farm roads. That openness gives the map a strong contrast between the dense town and the thin lines of the countryside. The castle's tower is the town's best-known sight, and the centre around it keeps a small, walkable scale.
