Dijon grew around the palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, and the map still shows it. The historic centre is a tight knot of irregular streets, framed by a ring of wider boulevards laid out where the old walls once stood. At its heart the semicircular Place de la Libération opens in front of the ducal palace, a clean arc that stands out among the crooked lanes around it.
To the south-west, the Burgundy Canal ends in the long basin of the Port du Canal. The small river Ouche arrives from Lac Kir, a reservoir built on it in the 1960s west of the centre, and runs through the southern districts. Beyond the boulevards the city spreads into newer neighbourhoods, tied together by tram lines and the ring roads that loop around its edges.
Dijon is known for mustard, for the owl carved into the wall of the Church of Notre-Dame that passers-by touch for luck, and for its place in the Climats of Burgundy, a UNESCO World Heritage listing that includes the historic centre. Lac Kir
