Dillingen lies in the Saarlouis district of Saarland, on the eastern bank of the Saar just where the smaller Prims river flows in. The town occupies a flat stretch of the valley, with wooded higher ground to the east and the river curving along the west. Two very different textures dominate the map: residential streets and, beside them, the large rectangular grounds of the steelworks.
Iron and steel have defined Dillingen since the Dillinger Hütte was founded in 1685. The works still cover a large share of the town, with rail sidings, halls and yards laid out in long parallel lines. The large neo-Romanesque Church of the Holy Sacrament, known locally as the Saardom, rises in the centre and gives the town a recognisable skyline.

The Dillinger Hütte covers a large rectangular area of halls, yards and rail tracks. This dense geometric block contrasts sharply with the residential streets around it.
Town centre
The older centre gathers around the Saardom church. Its streets follow a fairly regular pattern that grew alongside the town's industrial expansion.
