Dimāpur Map Poster
Dimāpur is the largest city in Nagaland and its commercial gateway. It sits on level ground where the plains of Assam meet the first ridges of the Naga hills, and that position explains its map. Most of the state is folded terrain with roads clinging to slopes, but Dimāpur spreads out in a broad, fairly even web of streets, markets and residential colonies.
Transport shapes the drawing. The railway line cuts through the city, the national highway towards Kohima heads off into the hills, and the airport, the only one serving Nagaland, sits on the edge of town. The Dhansiri River meanders along the western side. In the city itself, the ruins of the medieval Kachari kingdom survive as a group of carved stone pillars.
