Dishnā lies in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile where the river makes its great bend. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets in the narrow cultivated valley, surrounded by rectangular field plots and irrigation channels that follow the river, with the desert waiting just beyond the last of the farmland.
The surrounding area holds a notable place in the study of early Christian manuscripts. The Bodmer Papyri are often said to have been found near Dishnā in the 1950s, and the Nag Hammadi codices were discovered not far away along the same stretch of the Nile. The town itself, though, is a working agricultural centre rather than a monument.
