Dongfeng is a county town under Liaoyuan, in the south of Jilin province, where the plains of the northeast begin to fold into low, wooded hills. From above, the urban area is a tight cluster of blocks on a valley floor, with roads running out along the lower ground toward villages and fields. The county is widely associated with sika deer farming, which has shaped its rural economy for generations. It is also known for Dongfeng peasant painting, a folk art tradition of bright, detailed village scenes.
