Dongling is a district on the eastern side of Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province. On the map it runs from the edge of the city's dense core out toward open, hilly country, and the Hun River passes through its southern part. Wide new avenues and large residential compounds fill much of the land between the city and the hills.
The district takes its name from the Eastern Tomb, the Fuling mausoleum of Nurhaci. He founded the Later Jin dynasty, which later became the Qing. The tomb sits on a forested hillside and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. On the map, its axis and the surrounding woodland form a calm, green enclave.
Beyond the tomb, the landscape opens up. Farmland and low wooded hills mix with newer development along the main roads.
