Dusit is a district in the heart of Bangkok, north of the old city on Rattanakosin Island. King Chulalongkorn developed it around the turn of the twentieth century as a new royal quarter, and its map still reflects that intention. Wide avenues, large walled compounds, generous green spaces and canals set it apart from the dense lanes found elsewhere in the city.
Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue runs toward the Royal Plaza and the domed Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall. The Dusit Palace grounds, Chitralada Palace and Government House occupy large blocks nearby. Wat Benchamabophit, the marble temple, also stands within the district, and its western side reaches the banks of the Chao Phraya River.
