East London sits on South Africa's Indian Ocean coast in the Eastern Cape, and its map is framed by water on several sides. The Buffalo River meets the sea in a deep, curving mouth that holds the harbour, and further north-east the Nahoon River cuts another inlet through the coast. Between them, the city centre and residential suburbs spread over gently rolling land above a line of beaches.
The harbour is notable as South Africa's only major river port. The city is also linked to one of the best-known zoological discoveries of the twentieth century: in 1938 a coelacanth, a fish believed extinct for millions of years, was identified here after being caught offshore. The original specimen is kept at the East London Museum.
