Easton, in southeastern Massachusetts, reads on a map as a mostly wooded town. Its roads curve around ponds, wetlands and low hills instead of following a grid. Neighbourhoods sit in loops and cul-de-sacs off older country roads, and large areas of forest and conservation land stay almost blank. The overall effect is spacious and green, with the street network loosely drawn across it.
The town's best-known story belongs to the Ames family, whose shovel works in North Easton made the village prosperous in the nineteenth century. The family commissioned several buildings by the architect H. H. Richardson, including the Ames Free Library and Oakes Ames Memorial Hall. Together they make North Easton one of the more architecturally notable villages in New England, and its denser streets are easy to find on the poster.
Stonehill College occupies a large campus in the northern part of town. To the west, Borderland State Park spreads its ponds and trails over a wide area.
