Ebara lies in Shinagawa, in the south-west of central Tokyo. It was once a ward in its own right before being merged with Shinagawa after the Second World War, and the name remains in local stations and districts. From above, the area is a fine mesh of streets, far denser and more irregular than the planned grids found in many other cities.
The pattern comes from Tokyo's growth over former farmland, where paths and field boundaries became lanes lined with houses and small apartment buildings. Private railway lines cut diagonally through this mesh, and around each station a short shopping street, or shotengai, runs out into the residential blocks. Wide roads are few, which makes the map almost entirely texture.
An Ebara map poster works well precisely because of that density. In black and white the thousands of short lanes read almost like a fabric, with the rail lines and the occasional larger avenue giving it structure.
