Echigawa is in the Echi District of Shiga Prefecture, on the plain east of Lake Biwa. It used to be a town in its own right and is now part of Aishō. From above, the settlement stretches along a single historic road, with narrow lots running back from the street frontages and rice fields spreading out beyond them.
That road is the old Nakasendō, the inland route that connected Edo and Kyoto in the Edo period. Echigawa-juku was one of its post stations, and the long, linear form of the old town still reflects that past. The Echi River, which gives the place its name, runs nearby on its way to Lake Biwa.

The river flows across the plain towards Lake Biwa and marks one edge of the settlement. It adds a natural curve to an otherwise linear layout.
