Edgeøya is the third largest island of Svalbard. It lies in the southeast of the archipelago, across Storfjorden from Spitsbergen. No one lives on it, and it forms part of the Southeast Svalbard Nature Reserve. Seen from above, the island is broad and compact, with bays cutting into its outline and small islands scattered along its coasts.
The land is made largely of flat-topped mountains separated by wide valleys, a layered landscape typical of this part of Svalbard. Ice caps and glaciers cover parts of the east and south, while the western lowlands are open and cut by rivers. On a map these features appear as smooth plateaus and branching valleys. The coastline alternates between soft beaches and blunt headlands.
Edgeøya is important habitat for polar bears, walrus and reindeer. Its shores still hold traces of past hunting and trapping expeditions from Russia and Norway.
