Edinburgh is built on a landscape of volcanic hills and ridges. The Old Town runs along a narrow ridge from Castle Rock down to Holyrood Palace, with the Royal Mile along its spine and closes and wynds dropping off on either side. From above, the pattern looks like a fishbone, with narrow lanes branching off a single street.
To the north, across Princes Street Gardens, lies the New Town, planned in the late eighteenth century as a regular grid of wide streets, squares and crescents. The contrast between the two is one of the most striking in any European city, and both are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city hosts its famous festivals every August.
An Edinburgh map poster also includes the open ground of Holyrood Park, where Arthur's Seat rises well above the rooftops, and the Water of Leith winding through the city toward the port of Leith. To the north, the coastline of the Firth of Forth completes the picture, with the city running down to the water.
