El Geneina is the capital of West Darfur, in the far west of Sudan and a short distance from the border with Chad. The town stands on open, gently sloping ground beside a seasonal watercourse. From above it looks like a spread of low-density neighbourhoods, compound walls and unpaved lanes, organised around a few main roads that meet near the centre.
For generations the town has been a crossroads between Sudan and Chad and a regional centre for trade and administration in western Darfur. Historically it was the seat of the Masalit sultanate. The landscape around it changes sharply with the seasons, as the wadi fills during the rains and stays dry for much of the year.
