Elst lies in the Betuwe, the fertile river land between the Nederrijn and the Waal, roughly halfway between Arnhem and Nijmegen. The map shows a compact old centre around the church, surrounded by newer residential districts, with the railway running through town and the flat countryside divided into long narrow plots.
The Grote Kerk in the centre stands on a remarkable site: excavations beneath it uncovered the remains of Gallo-Roman temples, showing that the spot was important long before the town took shape. Today Elst belongs to the municipality of Overbetuwe and is known in the region for fruit growing.
