eMuziwezinto, long known as Umzinto, lies a short distance inland from the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, in the Ugu district between Durban and Port Shepstone. It is one of the older towns of the region, and from above its centre is a compact knot of streets set in a valley, with residential areas spreading up the surrounding slopes.
The hills around the town are covered in sugar cane, a crop that has shaped the local economy since the nineteenth century. On the map, roads curve around ridges and down toward the coast, where towns such as Scottburgh and Park Rynie sit by the Indian Ocean. Streams and valleys break up the pattern, adding soft, irregular forms to the composition.
