Ervália is a municipality in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, a region of steep, rounded hills that were long given over to coffee and small farms. The town centre sits in a valley. From above, its streets curve to match the terrain, so the plan looks irregular and organic rather than drawn with a ruler.
The urban core is small and fairly dense. A main street carries most of the town's traffic, and side streets climb the surrounding slopes. Beyond the edge, rural roads twist through the hills, linking the town to farms and hamlets spread across the municipality. Those winding lines make up much of the wider map.
