Fayetteville is the seat of Fayette County, south of Atlanta. On a map the town has two distinct layers. At the centre is a compact historic core around the courthouse square, with a few straight streets meeting there. Around it lies a much larger ring of later development, where curving roads, cul-de-sacs and tree-lined subdivisions spread out across the rolling Georgia piedmont.
The courthouse gives the centre its identity. Built in the 1820s, the Fayette County Courthouse is often described as the oldest surviving courthouse in Georgia. More recently the town has become known for film production, as the studio complex and planned community now called Trilith grew on the edge of town and added a new, carefully designed street pattern of its own.
