Fier is one of the main towns of central Albania, set on the flat Myzeqe plain a short distance inland from the Adriatic coast. The small Gjanica River runs through the centre, and much of the town's layout follows its course, with streets and blocks lining both banks and bridges stitching the two halves together.
Around the older centre, the plan is a mix of broad socialist-era avenues, apartment blocks arranged in rows and newer infill at the edges. The larger Seman River passes to the north, and beyond the town the plain is laid out in drainage channels and long rectangular fields, a legacy of large reclamation projects in the twentieth century.

A few kilometres west stand the ruins of ancient Apollonia, one of the most important classical sites in Albania, and the area has long been associated with the country's oil industry. Outside the town, straight canals and rectangular fields cover the Myzeqe plain, creating a precise geometric pattern that contrasts with the denser streets of the centre.
Road to Apollonia
Roads lead west from town toward the hill of ancient Apollonia and the coast, pulling the map outward from the urban core toward open country.
