Fleurus lies in the province of Hainaut in southern Belgium, just northeast of Charleroi, on the gently rolling farmland of the Brabant plateau. From above, the town centre is a compact knot of older streets, with roads fanning out to surrounding villages that now belong to the same municipality. Large open fields fill much of the space between them.
The name is known across Europe for the battles fought here, most famously in 1690 and 1794. At the 1794 battle, the French army used an observation balloon, one of the first times aircraft were used in war. A Fleurus map poster shows the open ground that made this area a recurring battlefield for armies crossing the Low Countries.
Today the town combines residential streets, industrial sites and farmland, with motorways and rail lines passing close by. The older lanes of the centre contrast with the long, straight roads across the plateau.
