Fomento lies in the northwest of Sancti Spíritus province, in the rolling country at the foot of the Escambray mountains. Its map shows the orderly block pattern found in many Cuban towns: straight streets meeting at right angles, a central square, and a road network that leaves the grid in several directions toward neighbouring towns and farmland.
The town holds a place in modern Cuban history. In December 1958, during the final campaign of the revolution in the former Las Villas province, rebel forces under Che Guevara took Fomento, and it is often remembered as one of the first towns captured in that offensive. The quiet grid on the map carries that episode with it.
A Fomento map poster shows the contrast between the regular town blocks and the more irregular landscape around them, where roads curve as the terrain lifts toward the hills and small watercourses cross the fields. 1958 campaign town
Fomento was taken by Che Guevara's column in December 1958, one of the first towns captured in the final Las Villas campaign of the Cuban revolution.
