Fonseca lies in the valley of the Ranchería river in the south of La Guajira, between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to the west and the Serranía del Perijá along the Venezuelan border to the east. From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of blocks, with the river and its tree-lined banks tracing a gentler curve nearby and roads running along the valley.
The area belongs to the heartland of vallenato music, and Fonseca shares that tradition with neighbouring towns along the valley. The surrounding land is dry and open for much of the year, used for cattle and farming, and the region is also known for large-scale coal mining further north along the Ranchería.
