Franschhoek lies at the head of a valley in South Africa's Western Cape, closed in on three sides by high mountains. Its map is long and narrow. The main road runs through the village along the valley floor, with short, orderly side streets branching off it, and the built-up area stops where the slopes begin to rise.
The name means French Corner. The valley was settled in the late seventeenth century by French Huguenot refugees, and many farms still have French names. At the end of the main road stands the Huguenot Monument, set against the mountains. Beyond it the road climbs steeply up the Franschhoek Pass.

The monument, which honours the valley's Huguenot settlers, stands where the main road ends at the foot of the mountains. It gives the street plan a clear end point.
Franschhoek Pass
East of the village, the road climbs the mountains in a series of tight bends. Those switchbacks form one of the most distinctive details on the edge of the map.
