Freiberg lies on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains in Saxony. The town grew rich from silver mining, which began in the twelfth century. From above, the medieval centre is easy to recognise: a compact oval of streets, still partly outlined by the line of its old walls and by the green belt that replaced them.
Inside the oval, the streets lead to the Obermarkt and to the cathedral. The cathedral is known for its Golden Gate portal and its Silbermann organs. Freiberg is also home to the TU Bergakademie, founded in 1765 and often described as the oldest mining university in the world, and to the terra mineralia collection in Freudenstein Castle.
