Freilassing lies in the far southeast of Bavaria, on the Saalach River, which marks the border with Austria. Salzburg sits directly across the water. On a map, the town looks like a compact grid of residential streets on the German bank, with the river forming a clear western and southern edge.
The town grew as a railway junction, and the tracks are still one of its most visible features. Lines converge near the station and then split towards Munich, Salzburg and the Berchtesgaden area. Around them, the neighbourhoods fill the flat ground in orderly blocks. Meadows and small woods mark the outskirts.
