Gafsa is one of the oldest cities in Tunisia. In antiquity it was Capsa, and archaeologists named the prehistoric Capsian culture after it. On a map, the old centre is a knot of narrow, irregular lanes around the kasbah, very different from the straighter streets of the modern districts around it.
The palm oasis lies beside the town, and irrigated gardens create a dense texture of small plots and paths. In the centre are the Roman pools, spring-fed basins that have been used since ancient times. Beyond them, the land opens out into dry plains and bare hills.
