Ganghwa Island lies at the mouth of the Han River, northwest of Seoul, where the river meets the Yellow Sea near the border with North Korea. It is part of Incheon and is linked to the mainland at Gimpo by road bridges across a narrow strait. The island is large enough to hold a county seat, farming villages, temples and a range of low mountains.
Much of Ganghwa's lowland was reclaimed from the sea over centuries. From above, the island reads as a patchwork of rectangular rice paddies between wooded hills, edged by broad tidal flats. The island has an unusually long history for its size. The Goryeo court moved its capital here in the thirteenth century during the Mongol invasions. In the nineteenth century, forts along the eastern strait saw clashes with French and American forces. Its dolmens are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Mani-san in the south holds an altar associated with Dangun, the legendary founder of Korea.
