Gaoua is the capital of the Sud-Ouest region of Burkina Faso, a town of around 45,000 people in the country's greener, hillier south. From above, a compact centre of market streets and administrative blocks thins out quickly into a loose pattern of tracks and family compounds, with cultivated fields and wooded slopes pressing in on every side.
The surrounding area is the heartland of the Lobi people, whose earthen homesteads have shaped the rural landscape for generations. The town has a museum devoted to the civilisations of the southwest, and the stone ruins of Loropéni, listed by UNESCO, lie to the west.
