The Quartier de la Gare covers the eastern part of the 13th arrondissement of Paris, running from the Seine inland toward the boulevards. On a map it shows several layers at once: a stretch of riverbank with its bridges, the long rectangular blocks of the Paris Rive Gauche development built over former railway land, and older streets further south, with the high-rise slabs of Les Olympiades rising among them.
The best-known building is the Bibliothèque nationale de France, whose four L-shaped towers stand at the corners of a vast rectangle like open books. A footbridge, the Passerelle Simone-de-Beauvoir, crosses the Seine from the library to Bercy. The quarter is also home to much of the neighbourhood often called the city's Chinatown.

Library rectangle
The Bibliothèque nationale de France occupies a large, clean rectangle with a tower at each corner. On the map it is one of the clearest single shapes in Paris.

A newer district of long, regular blocks sits over former rail yards. Its geometry is noticeably more rational than the older streets around it.
