Vitoria-Gasteiz is the seat of the Basque government, and its historic centre is one of the most recognisable shapes in Spain. The medieval town rises on a small hill in an elongated oval that locals call the almond, with parallel streets curving along its slopes and the Cathedral of Santa María at the top. South of the old town lies the Ensanche, a nineteenth-century extension with straighter streets and arcaded squares, including the neoclassical Plaza de España. The city was named European Green Capital in 2012, largely thanks to the Anillo Verde, a belt of parks, wetlands and woodland around the urban area.
