Gavrilov-Yam lies south of Yaroslavl on the Kotorosl, the river that flows into the Volga at Yaroslavl itself. The name recalls its origins as a yam, a postal station on the old road network where coachmen changed horses. The town grew along that route before industry arrived in the nineteenth century.
On the map, the river organises everything. It winds through the town in loose bends, with streets gathered on its banks and spreading out into a grid of low-rise blocks and private houses. Larger footprints near the water mark the industrial quarter, while the edges fade into fields and patches of woodland typical of the region.
