Genhe sits deep in the Greater Khingan Range in the far north of Inner Mongolia, where the Genhe River winds through a valley and the town follows it. From above, the built area is a narrow band of streets along the water. Forested slopes close in on both sides, so the settled ground reads as a clear shape inside a much larger green.
The town is often described as one of the coldest places in China. Winters are long, and the ground stays frozen for much of the year. Forestry shaped the local economy for decades, and the town's layout still reflects that. Rail lines and timber yards sit at the edges, and residential blocks line the flatter land near the river.
