Gerede lies in the uplands of Bolu Province, in northwestern Anatolia, on the long-established route between Ankara and Istanbul. From above, the town is defined by roads: the main highway corridor passes nearby, and a route toward the Black Sea region branches off here, making Gerede a significant junction in the region's transport network.
The town sits at a relatively high elevation, surrounded by a landscape of plateau, pastures and forested hills. Its core has an irregular pattern of streets around older neighbourhoods, while newer blocks extend along the main roads. Gerede has historically been known for leather working, a tradition connected to the livestock of the surrounding highlands.
