Germersheim lies on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, where the small Queich river joins the larger stream. In the nineteenth century the Kingdom of Bavaria, which then ruled the Palatinate, built a major fortress here. Its angular lines still show on the map as bastions, ditches and green belts around the old town.
Inside the old fortifications, the centre is compact and fairly regular, with streets set out in a clear pattern. Outside, the town spreads toward the river's floodplain, where oxbows, wooded islands and old channels show how far the Rhine once wandered before it was straightened.
Germersheim is also known as a university town. It is home to Mainz University's faculty for translation and interpreting, which brings students from many countries.
