Ghulja, also known as Yining, lies in the broad Ili River valley in the far northwest of Xinjiang, not far from the border with Kazakhstan. The river runs south of the city, and mountain ranges rise in the distance on both sides of the valley. On a map, the city stretches along the north bank, with wide avenues crossing the fertile valley floor.
It is the seat of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture and has long been a crossroads for Uyghur, Kazakh, Han, Hui and other communities. Older residential quarters in the city are known for low houses, courtyards and streets lined with poplars. These districts sit alongside newer blocks built as the city has grown.
