Gif-sur-Yvette lies in the Yvette valley in the Essonne, southwest of Paris. From above, the town sits in two layers. Down in the valley are the river, the RER B line and the older village streets. Up on the plateau to the north are research campuses and newer neighbourhoods. Wooded slopes between the two levels leave a green band across the map.
The town is closely tied to French science. It hosts a major CNRS campus and is part of the Paris-Saclay university and research cluster that has grown up on the plateau. On the map, that shows in large institutional plots with their own internal roads, which look very different from the winding residential streets in the valley below.
