Gil lies just south of Ludhiana in Punjab, in the flat, fertile plain that has made the region one of India's agricultural heartlands. On a map, the settlement sits at the meeting point of two patterns: the compact, irregular lanes of an older village core and the straighter streets of newer housing that has grown as Ludhiana has expanded outward.
Main roads connect Gil with the city to the north and with surrounding towns and villages, and much of the newer development follows those routes.
